About
What is modern quilting?
Modern quilting is about fresh colours and simple patterns or traditional blocks with a modern twist, young designers and old favourites, contemporary tools and techniques. While modern quilting is steeped in quilting tradition there are no rules, offering creative freedom, accessibility, and exciting new ideas.
What is the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild?
Created in May 2010, the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild is a web-based group for modern quilters in and around Melbourne, Australia interested in modern quilting. The first to start up outside of the USA, the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild is a branch of the now international Modern Quilt Guild.
What does the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild do?
Website
Our website is the place to read up about our Guild’s activities, see photos of our members’ quilts, or view and register attendance for our monthly activities. We also have an active forum for our members to participate in group activities and discussions.
Monthly Sewing Days
Members of our Guild meet in person once a month for a fantastic day of sewing, showing and telling, swapping, chatting, and general camaraderie. All kinds of quilting endeavours can be seen at these meetings, including machine piecing, hand quilting, and paper piecing.
Special Events
After a great first year in 2010, we’re in the process of creating and planning our second year of events. On the agenda are swaps and challenges, sew-alongs, retreats, make-and-take sessions, tutorials for different techniques and projects, as well as special guest appearances, and shop-hops.
Is the Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild for you?
Do you go to sleep at night dreaming of fabric combinations and quilt blocks? Whether you’re a beginner, or a seasoned quilter, jump in. Join in the chatter on the forums, share your quilting endeavours with us, be inspired by our members’ handiwork, come along to one of our meetings, and be part of our growing, developing, flourishing, nurturing community. We’d love to get to know you!

New to Melbourne and new to quilting! Looking forward to next Sit and Sew day if I can convince my husband to abandon golf and watch the munchkins!
Fabulous Helen! Welcome to Melbourne, and welcome to quilting! Be sure to apply for Membership, and to register for the Sit and Sew Day. Looking forward to meeting you!
I will in Melbourne during the first week of July. By any chance would your group be gathering during this time? I am an avid quilter and would love to attend an Australian bee, if possible. Thanks and hope we can connect. Cheers,
Linda
Hello Linda, we’ll be meeting on 9th July. For details, please click on the Calendar of Events tab in the navigation menu at the top of the screen, and select “Sit and Sew Days”.
Hi There, fairly new to quilting.. grew up with mum doing it, and am surprised by how much I have picked up without knowing.. got a sewing machine for Christmas and have been sewing away since.. very inspired by lots of different blogs on the internet, but would love to meet others in Melbourne with the same passion.. scary how quickly it can become an obsession! April Sew Day – can I just come along to see what it’s like? Do I need to register?
Hi Susanna,
So glad you found us! And yes, it definitely is a scary thing how these obsessions take on a life of their own! Our April Sit and Sew Day is full, but you’re more than welcome to pop in to say hi, we’d love to meet you! If you like us
and decide you’d like to join our Guild, then you can go ahead and register for upcoming sewing days. Registration is required for these events to ensure safety, and so that everyone has sufficient table space. Hope to see you soon!
